Here is a list of the devices, and tools, that I have used, and recommend. I won't ever recommend something I haven't used myself. I have used all of these at one point or another either in my own house, or in one of my customer's homes. You can learn more about my background here.

Home Automation Controllers

The Universal Devices ISY994i is less intuitive to setup than other smart home controllers, but it is very powerful. It has very powerful programming capabilities and supports most of the popular protocols. If you have any Z-Wave devices, make sure the model you gt supports Z-Wave, because there are different models. There is lots of good information on their Forum.

Wire Strippers

A good pair of wire strippers is a must have when performing any kind of wiring for your home automation system, solar PV system, or home entertainment system. These are the exact wire strippers that I use. They have very comfortable grips, and strip wire very well. They also have the holes in them for bending the solid wire to go around screws. I have had mine for several years, so they hold up very well.

Diagonal Cutters

Another essential tool when doing electrical wiring is good pair of diagonal cutters. These are high leverage cutters, which means you can cut even lower gauge wire with ease. These are the exact diagonal cutters that I use. I have had mine for several years, so they hold up very well.
